You’ll play a vital role in promoting wellness, managing health needs, and ensuring our school remains a safe place for learning.The school nurse performs professional nursing services at one or more schools in the maintenance of acceptable health standards, school heath records and the emergency treatment of student and employee health problems; does related work as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists the School Physician in physical, visual and auditory screening examinations of students and employees;

  • Administers first aid and emergency treatment to students and employees;

  • Prepares and maintains health records for school authorities;

  • Assists at school immunization clinics;

  • Arranges to transport sick or injured students or employees to hospital, home, doctor's or dentist's office in cases of emergency;

  • Inspects the school plant, playground and cafeteria and reports on general safety and sanitary conditions;

  • Orders, inventories and oversees the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment;

  • Consults with attendance teachers, staff members and school nurse-teachers concerning a variety of health factors related to non-attendance and communicable disease;

  • Prepares records and reports as required.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday ; 8:00A - 2:30P

You’ll play a vital role in promoting wellness, managing health needs, and ensuring our school remains a safe place for learning.

Delivery of Health Services

  • Protecting and maintaining students' health by providing professional nursing services in accordance with Nursing Standards and NYS Licensing. 

  • Providing NY State-mandated and annual screening programs including vision, hearing, weight and scoliosis. 

  • Facilitating NY State-mandated immunization and communicable disease control requirements.

  • Identifying and assessing students’ health needs, implementing services, and evaluating plans of care which impact student learning and achievement or safety.

  • Participating as members of the school’s multidisciplinary team, interpreting medical data and writing objectives for the health component of the IEP and/or 504 plan. 

  • Acting as liaison between home and school, and community providers for medical issues, including visiting students at home.

  • Identifying and reporting school building safety or environmental issues which impact student or staff health to the building administrator. 

  • Participating as members of the school’s Emergency Management, Health and Safety and Crisis Response Teams.

  • Prepares and maintains health records for students, including reports as needed.

  • Arranges for transportation of a sick or injured student or staff member to hospital, physician's office, or home, in cases of emergencies. 

  • Communicate concerns related to student and staff health and safety to appropriate staff and administration.

Information Management

  • Documenting health services provided in accordance with the NYS Nurse Practice Act.

  • Maintaining current pertinent health data for each student by periodic review and documentation on the individual student electronic and paper health records.

  • Completing student and staff insurance/accident reports.

  • Initiating and documenting health surveillance programs as needed and recording, compiling and reporting aggregate student health information as required by NYS Department of Health.

  • Preparing and monitoring the Health Office budget.

Health Education

  • Promoting an environment that is positive, student-centered, and differentiated to meet the needs of all learners.

  • Providing staff and community educational opportunities as needed.

Professional Development/Community Involvement

  • Developing and pursuing individual professional growth plans which may include: in-service workshops, graduate courses, conferences and collegial learning.

  • Participating in research and data collection involving School Nursing and Health Education.
