Work Hours: Monday - Friday; 8:00-2:45
The Cosmetology Instructor provides instruction in the Cosmetology program based on an established curriculum.
- Develop and teach a comprehensive curriculum in cosmetology, including theory and practical instruction in areas such as hair cutting, hair coloring, hair styling, chemical treatments, nail care, skincare, and makeup application;
- Ensure a curriculum that aligns with New York State Education Department regulations and prepares students for the New York State Cosmetology Licensing Examination;
- Demonstrate proper techniques and safety protocols for using cosmetology tools and products;
- Supervise and mentor students during hands-on practical work in a salon setting;
- Grade student work, including practical evaluations, written tests, and projects;
- Maintain accurate student records such as attendance, grades, and competency evaluations;
- Promote professionalism and customer service skills needed for success in the cosmetology industry;
- Stay up-to-date on the latest trends, techniques, products, and regulations in the cosmetology field;
- Purchase and maintain an inventory of cosmetology supplies and equipment for the classroom;
- Manage the classroom/salon environment to ensure safety and cleanliness;
- Coordinate with academic instructors to integrate core subjects into the cosmetology program;
- Advise students on career planning and post-secondary opportunities in cosmetology;
- Cultivate relationships with salons and businesses for student internships/job placement;
- Evaluate and grade students' class work, labs, quizzes, exams, and practical skills exams;
- Track student progress and completion of hours requirements and adapt teaching methods to meet varying abilities and learning styles;
- Prepare students for certification exams by reviewing materials and administering practice tests;
- Maintain accurate administrative records for attendance, grades, certification exam results, and other data;
- Participate in professional development activities to stay current in the field;
- Maintain positive relationships with colleagues, parents, advisory boards, and industry partners in the community;
- Implement BOCES policies, procedures and State Education Department mandates;
- Other duties as assigned.
- Candidates who do not hold the following certifications, but have the appropriate industry experience and/or degree are encouraged to apply. All applicant credentials will be reviewed by WSWHE BOCES Regional Certification Officer
- Must hold a valid New York State Cosmetology License; and
- Must hold a valid NYS Career and Technical Education(CTE) certification in Cosmetology 7-12 or be eligible for this certificate based on relevant industry experience (4 years minimum or 2 years minimum with related degree)
