Location: F. Donald Myers Education Center, Saratoga

Work Hours: Monday-Friday; 8:00A-2:45P

The Horse Care Instructor for Career and Technical Education (CTE) will prepare students for the exploration of the Horse Care and Equine-related fields, through a variety of classroom instruction; hands-on learning opportunities and work-based learning internships. The instructor will guide students in applying their learning to real-world situations, emphasizing caretaking, equipment, safety, handling of horses, riding and professionalism. By collaborating with community business and industry partners, and local farms, the instructor will provide enhanced training, equine and veterinary science learning experiences and job shadowing opportunities for students.

  • Develop and deliver an engaging, comprehensive curriculum on topics including: equine systems, equine physiology, nutrition, health, disease, emergency medical care, stable management, bloodlines and breeding and equine sales. 

  • Coordinate with Work-Based Learning Coordinators to provide and supervise job shadowing and internship hours and experiences.

  • Mentor students in career planning and college preparation.

  • Collaborate with school administration, English Language Arts teacher, Math teacher and program counterparts to provide a cohesive, integrated program for students.

  • Evaluate and grade students' class work, labs, quizzes, exams;

  • Track student progress and adapt teaching methods to meet varying abilities and learning styles;

  • Prepare students for certification/endorsement exams by reviewing materials and administering practice tests;

  • Maintain accurate administrative records for attendance, grades, certification exam results, and other data;

  • Participate in professional development activities to stay current in the field;

  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues, parents, advisory boards, and industry partners in the community;

  • Implement BOCES policies, procedures and State Education Department mandates;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
  • Candidates who do not hold the following certifications, but have the appropriate industry experience and/or degree are encouraged to apply.  All applicant credentials will be reviewed by WSWHE BOCES Regional Certification Officer

  • Classroom Teaching Certificate - Agriculture, Prek - 12; OR

  • NYS CTE Certification in Animal Science; or

  • NYS CTE Certification in Agriculture Production, Science and Business

  • Eligible for certification based on relevant industry experience (4 years minimum or 2 years minimum with related degree)
