A certified School Social Worker provides individual and group counseling for students to support their social, emotional and behavioral needs that interfere with their ability to access and perform in school.  The LMSW or LCSW will facilitate communication between home, school and community partners. The School Social Worker must have working knowledge of: the principals, practices and ethical standards of School Social Work; the relevant state and federal laws, rules and regulations; current knowledge of the community resources and support systems available to assist students and their families; and the ability to deal effectively and appropriately with colleagues, students, parents and other educational professionals regarding student concerns and problems.

  • Provides individual and group counseling according to students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) that address the social/emotional/behavioral needs that interfere with students’ learning or the ability of others to learn

  • Collaborates with school personnel in developing and implementing effective social and behavioral interventions for students

  • Facilitates and collaborates with Functional Behavior Assessments & Behavior Intervention plans focused on developing prosocial skills that allow students to access and participate in the educational setting.

  •  Coordinates home, school and community resources to help prevent and address crisis situations

  • Communicates with staff, administration and parents concerning students’ social, emotional and behavioral progress

  •  Consults and collaborates with social services, mental health agencies and other community providers

  •  Participates in the professional community by communicating regularly with administration and staff, assisting with problem-solving around student issues, and maintaining appropriate training and professional development.

Job Qualifications
  • Candidates must possess New York State Certification as a School Social Worker AND hold Professional Licensure as LMSW or LCSW.
